The New York State Dispute Resolution Association, Inc. (NYSDRA)
is a private not-for-profit professional membership organization
committed to the use and promotion of peaceful dispute resolution.
Through leadership, education, promotion of professional standards
and training, and development of innovative statewide programs,
NYSDRA provides opportunities for people, communities, organizations
and businesses to effectively respond to conflict.
NYSDRA is the premier association for dispute resolution professionals
in New York State. Established in 1985, its members consist of Community
Dispute Resolution Centers located in all 62 counties in New York
State and hundreds of individual dispute resolution practitioners,
organizations and others interested in the field of alternative
dispute resolution (ADR). NYSDRA is a recognized leader in the
field and sets the pace and standards for the dispute resolution
profession. NYSDRA also serves as a model for other states with
its unique organizational assemblage of community dispute resolution
centers, private and volunteer practitioners.
There are various methods of dispute resolution to deal with disputes
between parties, utilizing a confidential, consensual decision-making
process in which one or more trained, impartial persons assists
those in conflict. Among these methods are mediation, arbitration,
facilitation, and conciliation. These processes can help alleviate
interpersonal disputes and conflicts within organizations, neighborhoods
and businesses, as well as cases which may arise in civil and criminal
justice systems.
NYSDRA has been critical to the expansion of alternative dispute
resolution (ADR) in New York State. Specifically, in 1989, NYSDRA
was deemed an appropriate neutral administrator for Community Dispute Resolution Centers (CDRCs)
Program contracts. Almost immediately thereafter, NYSDRA contracted
with the NYS Division of Housing to administer its statewide Manufactured
Housing Mediation Program. A contract with the NYS Department of
Education soon followed. NYSDRA also contracts with the NYS Attorney
General's Office, the NYS Department of Health and the NYS Unified Court System
State ADR Office (for US Department
of Agricultural mediation).
