Restorative Justice Coordinator

The New York Center for Interpersonal Development is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the improvement of human relationships and the strengthening of communities through providing mediation, conciliation, restorative practices, and youth development. The Restorative Justice program is one of many programs at NYCID that works to collaborate with the community, to teach and provide skill-based trainings, circles, and a safe environment to be able to cultivate peace and respectful human relationships. Through this initiative, the Restorative Justice Coordinator will introduce the concept of restorative justice practices in a whole school community setting.


  • Responsible for conducting a needs assessment based on current school climate
  • Organize the school based Restorative Justice Action Team (RJAT)
  • In collaboration with the Principal and RJAT, determine the specific program structure that fits the school's needs
  • Engage the entire school community around the benefits and possibilities of restorative approaches
  • Work to create buy-in of the various school constituencies (teachers, support staff, students, parents, etc.)
  • Organize and schedule workshops and circles for these constituencies to educate the school community in restorative frameworks and to address concerns and points of resistance
  • Establish protocols and procedures for managing conflict and challenging behaviors using restorative approaches
  • Work with the RJAT and the Program Manager to create a Strategic plan for implementation in the fall
  • Participate in meetings and workshops as required


  • In depth knowledge, training and experience in conflict resolution, restorative and youth justice and mediation practices
  • Experienced and proven ability to work effectively in a diverse school centered environment
  • Experience facilitating workshops and circles
  • Motivated to work with young people
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Excellent interpersonal and community relations skills
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment and independently
  • Ability to pass background check for NYC Department of Education

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience
