The Dispute Resolution Center (DRC), serving Orange, Putnam, Sullivan & Ulster Counties, announces a Spring Basic Mediation Training & Apprentice Program. The five-day training is certified by the NYS Office of Court Administration.

Training: 32-hour Basic Mediation Training
Dates: April 27, 28, 29, 30 & May 1, 2015 (Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm)

ABOUT THE TRAINING: The Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) invites you to attend a comprehensive 32-Hour Mediation Training that covers the basic theory and skills of mediation in a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical grounding underlying effective conflict interventions, as well as the practical skills and techniques necessary to assist parties in conflict. Participants will learn to de-escalate negative and unproductive conflict interactions while assisting parties to engage in productive dialogue, interest-based negotiation and effective decision-making.
The training includes conflict theory and styles, active listening techniques, the mediation process, the role of the mediator, ethics, the role of law and lawyers in mediation, and more. The material will be presented through lecture, demonstration, role play and practice. Our approach starts you on the path to becoming a skilled mediator who is able to mediate in court-referred, community and private contexts.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE? While the focus is on developing DRC’s volunteer mediator panel, this course is for anyone who is interested in enhancing their communication and conflict resolution skills. It is appropriate for legal and business professionals, healthcare and mental health professionals, educators and public service professionals, as well as non-profit professionals and homemakers. Students, veterans and retirees are encouraged to participate. The training is invaluable to people who want develop their leadership skills or just want to communicate more effectively at home, at school, on the job or in the community.

ABOUT THE TRAINER: Roz Magidson, MPA is the Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Center, serving Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster Counties. She has been a lead trainer since 1990 and is certified by the NYS Court System’s Community Dispute Resolution Centers Program to provide basic mediation, custody mediation, and parent child mediation. Roz has a BA in Education and Communication from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Public Administration from Marist.
