CULTURAL HUMILITY TRAINING

Learn about the concept of cultural humility and its role in mediation. This training is for mediators who are affiliated with a Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC.)

Trainers:

Jasmin S. Brandowis a facilitator committed to empowering people through intentional conversations about identity, awareness, and impact. She earned a B.A. in Sociology from the University at Albany, SUNY and an M.A. in Political Science from the Nelson A.Rockefeller College of Public Affairs. During her graduate career, Jasmin completed a fellowship with the Center for Women Government and Civil Society, and wrote a policy on respect and interpersonal behavior for the New York State Office of Mental Health. From 2007-2012, she worked across multiple divisions ofNew York State Unified Court System, including the Offices of Workforce Diversity and Alternative Dispute Resolution and Court Improvement Programs. During this time her efforts were focused on policy and projects related to preventing workplace violence, increasing access to justice, and eliminating disparities in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Over the last three years, Jasmin has studied and taught yoga at a traditional school and created children’s educational tools centered on self-improvement.

Rebecca Koch, Trainer, Facilitator and Mediator. Former Liaison for NYS Unified Court System Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Court Improvements programs to statewide Community Dispute Resolution Centers. Since 2005, Rebecca has worked within the CDRC network in various capacities. Rebecca approaches conflict as an opportunity and is grateful for the chance to support people and groups in having constructive conversations.

The focus of this training will be:

  • teaching the core skill and attitude of cultural humility
  • facilitating self-reflection and self-critique
  • creating awareness of how culture affects communication
  • enhancing listening skills, mindfulness and attentiveness
  • increasing mediator competency
