NYSDRA Partnership with Malkin & Ross

NYSDRA has retained the firm of Malkin & Ross to provide strategic advice and legislative advocacy services. Developing and implementing a statewide outreach and advocacy plan is one of NYSDRA's six strategic goals for the year. The firm was selected after many months of work by the legislative advocacy working group chaired by Dominick Brancato, and the contracts were approved with strong support by NYSDRA's board of directors. Funding will be provided jointly by NYSDRA and the CDRC organizational members. Among the initial goals, the campaign will focus on building support for a restoration of OCA funding for CDRCs, cultivating relationships with potential "champions,"identifying legislative opportunities for NYSDRA and its members, positioning NYSDRA and its members as the go-to provider for the provision of dispute resolution services, and identifying connections and relationships between NYSDRA members and the governor, legislators, and OCA officials to help foster those relationships.

Empire State Farm Days

This year, for the first time, the New York State Agricultural Mediation Program(NYSAMP) offered free workshops and conflict coaching atEmpire Farm Days.

The workshops provided attendees with some simple, practical tools onhow to cool down your conflict to produce better results for everyone.These tools included:

• Cool down your conflict by asking questions to find the needsunderlying peoples’ positions;
• How to be an active listener;
• Know and manage your own hot buttons

By utilizing these practical tools, agricultural producers can often get betterresults in negotiating outcomes in conflict situations.In addition, NYSAMP offered conflict coaching to several agriculturalproducers who were currently experiencing conflict situations with others.Trained mediators listened to concerns, and provided feedback, usefultools, and ideas for action.

To illustrate the theme of "Cooling Down Your Conflict," the presentationsfeatured NYSAMP Program Manager, Chris Tauzel, in a fetching outfittopped off by an apron reading “Burnt to Perfection.” At the same time,NYSAMP Statewide Director, Peter Glassman, showed off a snorkelingmask and fins. He seemed to think that he was the cool one!

ACCES-VR Training

Last month, NYSDRA hosted a workshop with our partners at ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation). Twenty participants joined us for an interactive session dealing with communication, negotiation, and mediation. Representatives from Quality Control and CAP (Client Assistance Program) had the opportunity to meet and talk about the work they do serving adults with disabilities across New York State. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive including, “The presentation gave me much food for thought. Especially active listening skills to uncover the root of the problem so the real reason for the issue can be identified and resolved.” NYSDRA looks forward to providing more of the same instruction to our other state agency partners and others interested in resolving conflict constructively.
