CCDRC Advanced Training "Working with Attorneys & Self-determination

CCDRC Advanced Training

"We often mediate with attorneys in the room and, as advocates for their clients, their approach to representation varies widely. How do we as mediators view attorneys and their role, including how they choose to represent their clients in mediation? Do different ways that attorneys represent their clients trigger us more than others? Do our views of attorneys affect how we mediate and, if so, how? What is meant by 'self-determination'?

"We often mediate with attorneys in the room and, as advocates for their clients, their approach to representation varies widely.  How do we as mediators  view attorneys and their role, including how they choose to represent their clients in mediation? Do different ways that attorneys represent their clients trigger us more than others? Do our views of attorneys affect how we mediate and, if so, how? What is meant by 'self-determination'? How can we work with attorneys in ways that maximize self-determination? In this training, we will explore these questions, how working with attorneys affects us as mediators, and explore what might be considered a 'radical' approach to effectively working with their attorneys and their clients."
