Dispute Resolution (DR)

Conflict to Cooperation

Dispute resolution (DR) refers to methods used by trained neutrals to help people communicate more clearly, negotiate effectively, develop and evaluate solutions, or resolve conflicts. Neutrals do not take sides or represent the parties. Dispute resolution is an interdisciplinary field that attracts neutrals from backgrounds such as law, human resources, business, and social work.

In New York, the most popular types of DR are mediation and arbitration. Although people used to think of DR as an alternative to the court system, the two approaches to conflict management often work closely together. Dispute resolution offers a private and voluntary option beyond court.
