NYSDRA's Recognition & Awards 

NYSDRA has a tradition of recognizing and honoring commitment to and ingenuity in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution. The Andrew Thomas Peacebuilder Award and the Lawrence Cooke Peace Innovator Award are bestowed annually- on alternating years- at the NYSDRA Annual Conference. The Andrew Thomas Peacebuilder Award will be awarded in 2020 and nominations are currently being accepted.


The Andrew Thomas PeaceBuilder Award 

The Andrew Thomas PeaceBuilder Award was established in 1996 to honor individuals and organizations that have promoted the field of dispute resolution. Selection of recipients is based on promoting the welfare of society as a public official, community volunteer or social service organization in support of a peaceful community, and advocating for peaceful dispute resolution means for resolving conflict. The award also reflects contributions national or international in scope. NYSDRA membership not required. Learn more here.


The Lawrence Cooke Peace Innovator Award 

The Lawrence Cooke Peace Innovator Award was established to honor an individual or organization that has provided innovative leadership in the field, based upon a local or NYS state-based initiative, innovative in terms of a new practice in ADR or application of ADR practices in a new area, setting or population. Chief Judge Lawrence H. Cooke was influential in promoting the field of alternative dispute resolution in the NYS Court system. He implemented a plan to clear the backlog by expanding arbitration and establishing mediation in the courts and was instrumental in starting the Community Dispute Resolution Centers program. Learn more here.
