WHAT IS COMMUNITY MEDIATION SERVICE CORPS?
The Community Mediation Service Corps (CMSC) is a program of New York State Dispute Resolution Association (NYSDRA), with funding made possible by AmeriCorps State and National. CMSC partners with Community Dispute Resolution Centers (CDRCs) to help cultivate the next generation of community-based dispute resolution practitioners through extensive training, mentoring, and direct service opportunities. CMSC members provide a variety of conflict resolution services to youth and families in schools and in the community including restorative circles, conflict coaching, and mediation. CMSC Members also support the overall capacity building of CDRCs to help increase access to services for youth and community members.

WHAT DO CMSC MEMBERS DO?
THE CMSC AmeriCorps program has three different member placement tracks: school based ADR services; youth services in community settings, or family services (custody visitation mediation related work). We are committed to working closely with our CDRC host site partners in developing customized programming at the local level. Therefore, position descriptions for each site may vary slightly. In general though, a service year member helps build important internal capacity for CDRCs through:
  • Case management work
  • Relationship development
  • Delivering services to youth such as conflict coaching, mediation, community building circles, and more
  • Developing outreach materials including packets and brochures
  • Helping design and/or update programming that is responsive to community needs
