LIT-U-ATION: Sparking an interest in Literacy Through a Restorative Lens across generations

Literacy is more than reading and writing. It is about voice, connection, and empowerment across generations. LIT-U-ATION, co-founded by Quianna Bennett and Tracey Johnson, is an innovative program designed to address the literacy crisis through restorative practices. By building partnerships with schools, community organizations, and families, the program creates a supportive environment where children as young as five can explore language while adults engage as co-learners. Sessions combine culturally responsive literature with restorative circles to spark curiosity and healing dialogue. This interactive workshop will feature a panel discussion moderated by Quianna Bennett with Tracey Johnson, Co-Founder of LIT-U-ATION; Marshay Hines, former Principal of Albany Leadership Academy Middle School; and Dr. Tia Pressey, Executive Director of Engagement and Student Support of Hudson City School District. Each partner engaged with LIT-U-ATION in unique ways and will share their insights and experiences about how the program created meaningful literacy and restorative pathways in their schools and communities. Participants will hear lessons from the program’s launch, reflect on the power of intergenerational literacy engagement, and learn how restorative practices can transform literacy work into community-building experiences. You will walk away with strategies to cultivate joy, trust, and collective responsibility for literacy in your own communities.
